Product Information

The author of this original volume was an editor of Freedom - the anarchist journal started by Peter Kropotkin in 1886 - in the 1960s when it was a weekly paper. His occasional column in Freedom in the mid-1990s, which spawned the title of this book, was the result of an idea born while he was ruminating on a Scottish island. In a direct, and rather satisfying, reversal of the practice of the capitalist press, he devised it around the notion of only taking note of what is written in the anarchist press, while ignoring the outpourings of the tabloid mush - hence the title. In his inimitable way and highly literate style John Rety casts his observant and amusing eye over economics, Speakers' Corner, public transport, Shakespeare, Spain, the Anarchy in the UK festival, demonstrations, Elizabethan politics, and a hundred other matters. An accomplished linguist, he uses and interprets more Latin phrases than you see in an average year and enjoys playing with language. Readers can also have fun seeking out the 'hidden' acrostic words in the articles. 'Here be pictures of world events and the general concerns of life, not too interfered with by newspapers'. Emily Johns' beautiful drawings, specially commissioned for the book comment on, rather than merely illustrating, the text.

Authored by John Rety, published by Freedom Press, 1996.
