Allen explores the transformation that turned African bond-labourers into slaves and segregated them from their fellow proletarians of European origin as a means of controlling labour unrest. He argues that in the early years of the American colonies neither social practicce nor law recognized any special privileges inconnection with being white, but by the eighteenth century that had all changed.
