This is a huge book, about the size of an old telephone directory, crammed full of listings of trade unions, political movements and co-operative societies. One for the archivists out there, this is close to being an antiquarian book really.
Written by Ian MacDougall and published by the Scottish Labour History Society, 1978.
From the Spirit of Revolt archive:
"The Catalogue includes records of the working class in Scotland but also any links relating Scots to UK wide and international movements. It also highlights records of Scots held in collections abroad. The entries are arranged over seven sections which include political groups, movements and societies, periodicals, newspapers and individuals. Themes such as ‘reform, radicals, riots and conspiracies 1792-1835’ are included with other events.
The listing of Trade Unionism runs to 200 pages from very early combinations of handloom weavers to modern unions. The Labour and the Communist Parties, Anarchists, Socialist Sunday Schools and categories such as the Spanish Civil War and the Soviet Union are detailed. Individuals’ letters and reminiscences are included such as Tom Mann, Thomas Paine or Robert Owen."
